Plot Summary

From master-of-terror Brian De Palma comes this stylish psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final frame. Carter Nix (John Lithgow) is a respected psychologist, loving husband and devoted father who decides to take a year off to help raise his daughter. Carter's wife Jenny (Lolita Davidovich) is pleased to have her attentive husband home - at first. When Carter shows obsessive behavior toward their daughter, Jenny becomes concerned, and to complicate matters, Jenny's old flame (Steven Bauer) re-enters her life. But nothing can prepare her for the emergence of Carter's multiple personalities, and a fiendish plot to recreate the infamous experiments of his deranged father. It all adds up to a roller coast ride of heart-pounding suspense and stunning visuals in a film the New York Times calls "a delirious thriller."

Fresh: Rather than clarifying, De Palma's technique with Raising Cain effectively obliterates the audience's bearings. – Eric Henderson, Slant Magazine, Aug 26, 2006

awsome

Mildy Diverting Story Handled by a Master Of Suspense Does Not a Masterpiece Make

Raising Cain is a mildly diverting early ninties thriller. The story is pedestrian but the directing by Brian De Palma has flair to be sure. The drawbacks are that the movie has a predictable twist midway through and the movie has not aged well.

However the highlights far outway the bad in this, a well done potboiler by De Palma. The problem is that if you are a fan of De Palma's work you have seen everything here before in one movie or another. The central throughline of the film is one that De Palma has revisited time and time again. This is not necessarily a negative for everyone, but it can be tiresome if you are familiar with De Palma.

In summary, to use a cliche, this is a "rainy day" movie. If you go in expecting little your expectations will be blown away. If you go in expecting much, you might be due for a fall.
