Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Parents may also be happy to see a movie for children that doesn't involve wizards, vampires or action figures that can be bought in the food court. – Mike Hale, New York Times, Jul 27, 2010

Fresh: Tenderness isn't a quality found much these days in the whirring-and-clanging busyness of family movies, which makes this G-rated gem's emphasis on emotion and heart all the more laudable. – Glenn Whipp, Los Angeles Times, Jul 22, 2010

Fresh: Honesty about the difficulties, both large and small, of being part of a family is what Ramona and Beezus does best, even if the rough and dangerous edges have been filed down. – Ian Buckwalter, NPR, Jul 23, 2010

Rotten: Despite everyone's efforts, Ramona comes across as an insufferably spoilt and attention-seeking little horror. – John Walsh, Independent, Dec 13, 2010

A nostalgic look back at the good old days...

Having grown up with the Beverly Cleary books and "Ramona" television series from the 1980's, this was one film that I absolutely did not want to miss...and it WILL be going on my iPod the day it is released. The word is that author Ms. Cleary actually had input in the movie script (imagine that!) and she indicated that she did not want trendy clothes or current "kid lingo" to muddle the story itself. Her wishes were honored, and the result was a simple, innocent, and completely sweet mirror of childhood. Although it boasts a recognizable cast and obvious advances in modern technology (e.g. Ramona's trademark daydreams/fantasies), this still maintains the general look and feel of a film that could have easily been made 10 or even 20 years ago. The Quimby family is never glamorized, and just like in the original books, they are portrayed as honest, hard-working, middle-class people who make it through the hard times by living simply and appreciating each other. Well-known stars like Selena Gomez, Sandra Oh, John Corbett, and Josh Duhamel add some extra sparkle to the film, while newcomers like the ever-effervescent Joey King make sure that the charm is there for those of us who remember being introduced to Ramona decades ago. Most of today's kids are used to action-packed movies with potty jokes aplenty, but "Ramona and Beezus" is a welcome retreat to the days when the media was simpler, children utilized their natural creativity more often, and they didn't grow up more quickly than they should. I enjoyed this movie so much and appreciated the fact that it stuck so close to Beverly Cleary's original stories. (In fact, I think they used at least one subplot or minor details from every single one of the Ramona books.) It gives me hope that movies like this still exist, and maybe--just maybe--we will see these little bursts of nostalgia more often at the movie theaters, no matter how much society changes on us.

I love Selena :) She is the best.

Selena did a FANTASTIC job in her big-screen debut as older sister, "Beezus" Beatrice Quimby in Beverly Cleary's beloved classic. It was inspiring. I loved it all, and Selena will forever be the best. :D Joey King was awesome, too! She is so energetic I wish I had a little sister, too! I grew up reading these books (no I'm not even a teen yet, so it was recently) and they were amazingly written. HILAROUS LIKE THIS MOVIE. Definitely did the amazing books justice :) Selena and Joey 4ever
