Plot Summary
In this outstanding independent comedy, down-and-out restaurant owner Dave Purcell (William Hurt) is ready to close his doors, until his friend Alphonse devises a wacky plan. They fake a sighting of a rare bird, and soon the place is filled with bird watchers, famous folks and a potential love interest. But Alphonse has another not-so-benign scheme that could put Hurt behind bars and close the restaurant for good.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Rendered bland and frustrating by its endless attempts to make the odd odder.
Rotten: The movie keeps coming back to the achingly unfunny Phonce and his several silly subplots.
Fresh: Whimsical and touching.

Comfort
This movie is absolutley beautiful. The setting is in Newfoundland and the music is amazing. Sadly, the soundtrack was never released for this movie as far as i know. I am not sure what the music type is either to find similar music. Anyways, the story line is real, the charcters are real, everything is quite flawless. The accents are spot on, the comedy is kind of dark, and the drama/love part of it all ties it together perfectly. I'd recommend this movie to anyone who likes romatic comedies.
I've actually lived in Newfoundland.
Okay, I just downloaded this movie because I discovered it had been filmed in Newfoundland. I actually lived there when I was a child. My dad was in the military and was stationed in Newfoundland. Newfoundland was a beautifully rugged and pristine environment. We used to cut down our Christmas trees each year from the woods. Really! And my Dad went moose hunting and we ate moose stew (try finding that at Trader Joe's . . .) We also gathered bluberries from the wild. This is all quite real--not making any of it up. And the snow. Wow. Lots and lots of snow. Again, very rugged country.
I was quite young and I remember that the local kids were called "Newfies" and they would throw rocks at us across the river. (Don't recall anyone getting hurt . . . must have been good clean "newfie" fun.) Anyway, I would love to return to Newfoundland some day to see it as an adult. As I recall, Newfies have their own special way of conversing. A famous conversation is like this:
Two fishermen talking: The first one says: "Arn?" (Means "did you catch any fish today?")
And the second fisherman answers: "N'arn!" (Means "No, I didn't catch any fish today.)
Trust me here, this is real. They really talk this way.
Now, off to watch this film.
Anything with William Hurt has to be good.
