Plot Summary
Set in 1950s Brazil, this sumptuous drama recounts Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Elizabeth Bishop (Miranda Otto, “Lord of the Rings”) and her love affair with architect Lota de Macedo Soares, the designer of Rio’s famed Flamengo Park. Initial hostilities between the pair make way for a complicated yet long-lasting love affair that dramatically alters Bishop’s relationship to the world around her. From Oscar-nominated Brazilian director Bruno Barreto (“Four Days in September”), “Reaching for the Moon” is an intimate snapshot of the search for inspiration, wherever and however you find it.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: In his 19th feature, Mr. Barreto assuredly embraces an approach that's counter to much received wisdom about Bishop's life and work. But his film ultimately dooms itself.
Rotten: Everything ultimately gives way to the stately, simplistic, inevitable pace of by-the-numbers biopics, from some woefully tinny, hit-and-run screenwriting to the usual difficulties surrounding the dramatization of an author's craft.
Fresh: The period detail is finely caught, the lovemaking scenes achieve a tenderness and intimacy rare in contemporary cinema, and for good measure a political coup is happening offstage. We more than get our money's worth.
Fresh: While the provincial Brazilian scenery and slick period production design are certainly seductive to the eye, it is what happens in the foreground that truly matters.

Loved it!!
I loved this movie. Excellent storytelling. A little sad at times but amazing. Best lesbian movie I've seen in a while.
Beautifully moving
Exceptionally filmed, acted, and conveyed. A real portrayal of love, obsession, addiction, possession, and the constant fear of losing everything perfect around you. We always want more things/distractions - sometimes we do it so we want other things less.
Worth it...
A simple inside into a less judgmental society in the 50s! Culture, love, control, feelings…good performances.
