Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: The story remains sadly mired in botdom, which leads to some boredom.
Rotten: Its remote-controlled emotional responses leave little room for genuine uplift.
Fresh: Aas the plot proceeds from boy-meets-dad verbal sparring to an uneasy peace to the underdog-vs.- champion title bout, it becomes increasingly easy to forgive its many nicks.
Fresh: Real Steel is a blast, an unabashed crowd-pleaser that mixes Rocky, Transformers, video games and father-son bonding to great, if corny, effect.

WHEN "ROCKY" MEETS "TRANSFORMERS"
If you're planning on buying or renting "Real Steel" and expecting a crowd-pleasing thrill ride of a movie that requires little to no thinking, look no further. My friends and I walked into the theatre with the sole intention of watching a bunch of giant robots beat the living daylights out of each other, and we definitely weren't disappointed. But surprisingly enough, the film had much more to offer besides its thrilling action sequences. For one, the corny, formulaic, and all too predictable plot that came along with the flick's basic premise wasn't as annoying as I thought it would be. Hugh Jackman's performance as Charlie Kenton, the main character, was believable and convincing like all his other roles, and even his young co-star Dakota Goyo was charming and likable in some scenes, even though his character, Max, in general was just a studio ploy for families to bring their kids to see the movie. Aside from the acting though, the cinematography was incredible, the robots were well-designed, and the storyline had a steady pace throughout. But if I had to point out one major flaw overall, it would only be that the film constantly overdoses on "subtly" advertising several products and companies. From Dr. Pepper to miscellaneous Microsoft devices, I swear there's at least one unnecessary promotional plug in just about every scene. But I digress. As for some of the snooty critics who gave this movie a rotten rating, they obviously need to lighten up. Sure, "Real Steel" isn't a masterpiece by any means, but that's clearly not what the director's intention was to begin with. Like I said before, this is supposed to be a fun, nonsensical, action-packed popcorn flick with well-crafted special effects, intensely epic battle sequences, and an easy-to-comprehend story. If that's not your idea of a good time, well…it's your loss. For the best experience possible, I recommend purchasing the film in incredible HD. Trust me, it's worth the money!
Don't be fooled
This really is a good movie! Yes, it isn't realistic and yes, the plot is no major work of fiction but that really doesn't retract from this movies quality! The acting is good and you really feel for the characters. The preview makes it look kinda cheesy, but it really isn't at all and has a great storyline. If you like special effects, epic fights, but still want a good drama side than this is definitely for you!
Nice change
As a father who has suffered through numerous boring kids movies. I actually enjoyed this one. Good music and fighting robots. Not too shabby.
