Plot Summary

Three Chinese-American sisters from New York try to reconcile their loves and lives in this smart family comedy which won Best Picture at the Tribeca Film Festival. After their recently retired father Ed (Tzi Ma) suddenly disappears, sisters Samantha (Jacqueline Kim), Julie (Elaine Kao), and Katie (Kathy Shao-Lin Lee) are forced to abandon their hectic and disparate lives to look for him. On their way to finding him - and themselves - Samantha courts infidelity, Julie falls for another woman, and Katie flirts with expulsion. "Red Doors" has captivated audiences, festival jurors, and film critics alike while also winning awards at CineVegas and Outfest. Funny and moving, absurd and painfully real, "Red Doors" provides a unique view of the modern American family.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: This agreeable, lightweight movie, written and directed by Georgia Lee, turns the malaises of a suburban family into bittersweet farce that teeters between cheeky humor and surface pathos. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: Named for the traditional Chinese color of good luck, the gentle indie drama Red Doors is really more in the rosy pink range of the color palette than a more primary emotional hue. – Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: Despite pic's earnestness and obvious good intentions, narrative elements, carefully set forth though they may be, fall back on overfamiliar, underdeveloped tropes. – Ronnie Scheib, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: Not surprisingly, the three Wong sisters and their father could exist in separate movies -- their (short) stories are interesting but not convincingly knit together. Think of Red Doors as a promise, and hope that [director] Georgia Lee keeps it. – Ty Burr, Boston Globe, Jan 13, 2007
