Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The actors have a good workout and Hopkins earns his enormous paycheck, but at day's end it all feels like a revved-up, market-driven rehash of a once-thrilling film. – Edward Guthmann, San Francisco Chronicle, Oct 18, 2008

Fresh: Elegant, dark, alluring, frightening, mesmerizing. – Washington Post, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Red Dragon is closer in tone and story to Silence than to the campy, over-amped Hannibal. – Eric Harrison, Houston Chronicle, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: It's highly entertaining, fast-paced and ultimately without deeper meaning, just like most other Hollywood blockbusters these days. – Peter Howell, Toronto Star, Jun 24, 2010

wow

This is a really great movie. I somehow now have this crazy obsession about Hannibal Lecter. All of the movies about him are extremely interesting and I am never bored watching them. I don't understand why this movie was made though considering it has the exact same story as Manhunter. Still a great movie.

Eh...

I think I preferred the original... "Manhunter..." but that's just me.

Red Dragon

The book made a big impression on me when I read it 20 years ago. The Manhunter film version of the story was good. Perhaps better than Red Dragon. But Red Dragon is a good movie too and definitely worth watching for the comparison value. No movie really captures Hannibal Lecter's intelligence like the book did. Watch it. But see Manhunter, too.
