Plot Summary
The latest in Spike Lee’s Chronicles of Brooklyn series (which also include SHE’S GOTTA HAVE IT, DO THE RIGHT THING, CROOKLYN, CLOCKERS, and HE GOT GAME), RED HOOK SUMMER tells the story of Flik Royale, a sullen young boy from middle-class Atlanta who has come to spend the summer with his deeply religious grandfather, Bishop Enoch Rouse, in the housing projects of Red Hook. Having never met before, things quickly get off on the wrong foot as Bishop Enoch relentlessly attempts to convert Flik into a follower of Jesus Christ. Between his grandfather’s constant preaching and the culture shock of inner-city life, Flik’s summer appears to be a total disaster--until he meets Chazz Morningstar, a pretty girl his age, who shows Flik the brighter side of Brooklyn. Through her love and the love of his grandfather, Flik begins to realize that the world is a lot bigger, and perhaps a lot better, than he’d ever imagined.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Spike Lee's messy, meandering, bluntly polemical "Red Hook Summer" has one crucial ingredient: a raw vitality.
Fresh: Peters brings a magical energy to the movie's most laggard moments, infusing a so-what drama with a must-see performance.
Rotten: Lee's latest film feels like several intriguing ideas in search of an over-arching story.
Rotten: In truth, the film fizzles as much as it fumes. There is a kind of lassitude that sets in, even as it builds toward some kind of reckoning.

Spike on a shoe string budget
All of the kid's acting in this film was atrocious--and it hampered the film--since the drama revolves around them to a very large extent. It's a shame that with this film Spike announced the "conclusion" of his "Brooklyn Series." (Does this mean that the remainder of his film efforts can not involve Brooklyn--Im confused?) Not realizing that he even considered his films shot in Brooklyn a series, I am disappointed that he will not do a part two of She's Gotta Have it--I did love seeing Camilla Parker Johns? (Nola Darling)--who has now morphed into Mother Darling, the Jahova Witness.
Love Spike, loved this
Saw this at Sundance and got to see Spike and the actors talk about it afterward so maybe I'm biased, but I loved this film. Spike brings out the best in his actors and they carry the film. It does get a little sleepy and meandering in the middle, but stick it out. Mr. Lee always has an agenda and a point to make, it just takes a little while in this one. If I find myself with 2 free hours soon, I'll watch it again.
Real Art
Spike takes the viewer in a thrilling heartfelt journey!
