Plot Summary

In 1942, 3,000 Japanese troops invaded the Aleutian Island of Attu in Alaska, the only invasion of American soil since the War of 1812. Sixty years later, a U.S. soldier who fought on the remote island journey back to one of the worst battles of World War II, where he relives the 19-day combat that the American government kept secret.

No Band Of Brothers

If you are looking for a history lesson than skip this and find a book. The summary implies that the government kept this battle secret but they only mention that quickly and it is the opinion of the main character, a soldier who was in the battle and is revisiting the island for the first time since. There is a lot of interesting archival footage and pictures. The story centers around two old friends pointing out various spots around the island where the action took place. Maybe I am cynical but I was left feeling underwhelmed, there is only one point of view. A Japanese response to his opinion of the monuments, or more information about how they came to be on the island would have been appropriate. A more in depth look at the strategic reasoning behind Japans invasion and the reasoning of why it took a whole year for the US military to respond I would have appreciated.

Awesome

This is a gorgeous documentary made by some very talented people. A story little told. Please rent it! Erica

Worth the rent.

This is a little told story and a quintessential part of history. The importance of which cannot be understated. It is worth the watch, if for nothing else than to get an American soldier's first hand experiences in war time.
