Plot Summary

In the 2006 war between Hezbollah and Israel, one million cluster bomb munitions rained down upon the fields, orchards and villages of South Lebanon. An estimated 30% failed to detonate. Three years later, teams of locally recruited and trained deminers race to clear the land before more civilians are injured or killed. Remnants of a War is a feature documentary, photographed in beautiful high definition, that takes an intimate look into the lives of these brave Muslims and Christians, Sunni and Shia, women and men. They work to make their land safe again, while their country endures the worst political and economic crisis in 15 years. Director Jawad Metni filmed for over 2 years in South Lebanon, spending months embedded with the demining teams in the field. "Remnants of a War" is a primer on the cluster munition problem, and a portrait of a people struggling to make a living and return the land to their fellow Lebanese.

Remnants of War is a very compelling doc and visually stunning

Remnants of a War is an entertaining and visually stunning film. While the war between Israel and Lebanon is always in the background the focus of the film is the brave women and men of Lebanon who for the love of their country - a country they believe should be beyond partisan divides- are taking huge chances with their life to save others. The brave characters in the film are seen through the subtle and inquisitive lenses of award winning Lebanese American cinematographer Jawad Metni - one of America's boldest documentary filmmakers. For those who like poetry, politics and great story making this film is a primer and will remain in my view a classic.

Remnants

Remnants is beautifully shot film and a very intimate tale of individuals who find a new sense of purpose in the aftermath of the war of 2006. It is moving and sobering, and yet there is humor and levity in the every day lives of these people who clearly love their country and who take serious risks to clear their land of cluster munitions. It's hard to imagine living in a place where there is a constant fear of war.... these people are inspiring and provide a window into life after war. It is very clear that the filmmaker, Jawad Metni, spent months upon months capturing the small yet telling details of his characters' lives and only through such dedication and passion can one really understand the situation. I highly recommend this film as a unique chance to understand the 2006 war and its aftermath -- through real people instead of statistics.

Remnants of a War

This is a wonderful film about the demining of cluster bombs that is still going on in Lebanon today in the aftermath of the 2006 Lebanon War. It's actually pretty apolitical, yet informative, touching and beautiful to look at; it just tells the stories of five or six Lebanese people who have taken the job of demining their countryside, and the internationals who are helping them. I really recommend it.
