Plot Summary
Adapted from Rod Sterling's teleplay, "Requiem for a Heavyweight" stars Anthony Quinn, Jackie Gleason, Mickey Rooney and Julie Harris. It tells the story of a prizefighter who eventually falls into the world of professional wrestling. Muhammad Ali (billed as Cassius Clay) has a small role as a fighter.

Fresh: A serious incisive drama that pulls no punches in its low-keyed exposure of its pitiable has been hero and the sleazy, harried sidekicks who share his sweat-stained and blood-stained world.
Fresh: It still packs considerable punch as a character study, although its action has slowed to where the plot padding is often obvious.

Requiem for a Heavyweight
A brilliant, heart wrenching character study of a broken man. As a life long boxing fan I found the opening minutes of this film difficult to watch. After a match is over you don't see the aftermath for the loser. This film captures defeat and all it's sorrow. Anthony Quinn, Jackie Gleason, Mickey Rooney, and Julie Harris are outstanding.
