Plot Summary

This gritty emotionally charged film is set amidst the abandoned beaches and faded glory of Coney Island, Brooklyn. Based upon the novel by celebrated author Hubert Selby Jr., the story intricately links the lives of a lonely widowed mother (Academy Award Winner Ellen Burstyn), her son Harry (Jared Leto), his beautiful girlfriend Marion (Jennifer Connelly) and his best friend Tyrone (Marlon Wayans). Requiem for a Dream is a hypnotic tale of four human beings each pursuing their vision of happiness. Even as everything begins to fall apart, they refuse to let go, plummeting with their dreams into a nightmarish gut-wrenching freefall.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: [It] may be a bummer to some audiences, so harsh is its view of the drug culture. But no one interested in the power and magic of movies should miss it. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Dec 6, 2009

Rotten: It's two hours of slumming in a vision of hell hatched from bourgeois comfort. – Jay Carr, Boston Globe, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Aronofsky brings a new urgency to the drug movie by trying to reproduce, through his subjective camera, how his characters feel, or want to feel, or fear to feel. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Both bleak and bleakly funny, appalling in its excesses and exhilarating in its execution. – Glenn Lovell, San Jose Mercury News, Jun 24, 2010

Amazing

If drugs have effected you in any way this movie will effect you in every way.

A Dream Come True

Requiem for a Dream is perhaps the greatest movie ever made! Darren Aronofsky (the director) is simply a genuis. His descriptions of addiction through mind-blowing visuals, intense sound effects and insane editing and directing makes this film passionate and overwhelming. With a depressing yet simultaneously thrilling story of drugs and lives ruined this is a film every one has to see. There is simply too much to say about it. Darren Aronofsky's directing and the acting from stars such as Jared Leto and Ellen Burstyn makes this movie a must see. You need to download this!

Emotional

Wow. This movie was probably the most gut wrenching movies I have ever seen. I'm not talking gorriness but emotions. If you have ever seen anyone on any type of drug or if you are in anyways involved with drugs this movie makes you want to cry. The acting was unbelievable and the music makes the movie but it will make you very depressed the first time you see it. I didnt want to go to bed. So the movie was good in itself but the emotional toll it could pay on you is bad so i gave it a three.
