Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The work of ingenious technicians who seem either not to know what gave the original film its magic, or not to care. – Janet Maslin, New York Times, Apr 17, 2009

Rotten: Any movie in which a Midwestern prairie actually looks more attractive and more interesting than the enchanted land over the rainbow is in big trouble. – Richard Schickel, TIME Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: It's bleak, creepy, and occasionally terrifying. – Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Best to see them as individual films with nothing in common apart from source material, one a classic, the other a strong enough picaresque amongst some decent fabulation. – Ian Nathan, Empire Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Worth It!

This movie is actually really good. It is a little far fetched so if you are super crazy in love with the original then you probably will not like it. You also have to remember when it was made to appreciate it. I personally feel like there are a few parts that are a little scarier than the original so if you have little ones you may want to watch it first. All in all the movie is worth the $3 rental fee to see for your self.

not what you might expect

This movie was made in the 1980s and is very little like the famous MGM "Wizard of Oz" from the 1930s. It is much darker and more of a cult movie than a real kids movie. It is based on the books "Ozma of Oz" and "The Marvelous Land of Oz," which are sequels to the book the "Wizard of Oz," so it does make sense within the Oz universe. But this is the one film that was directed by Walter Murch, who is more famous for working on "Apocalypse Now" (he won an Academy Award for his work on it) and the Godfather films - so that tells you something about his sensibility. It may be the movie you are looking for if your kids are older or you like dark fairy tale movies.
