Plot Summary
From executive producer Sam Mendes comes The Hollow Crown, stunning adaptations of four of Shakespeare’s most treasured plays featuring all-star casts. In Richard II, King Richard (Ben Whishaw of Skyfall), a vain, self-indulgent man who rules with little regard for his people’s welfare, is called upon to settle a dispute between his cousin Henry Bolingbroke and Thomas Mowbray. In an act that will spell doom for his reign, he banishes both men, and sets into motion a chain of events that will change British history forever. The work of William Shakespeare is brought to life by a cast that also includes Patrick Stewart (Star Trek), James Purefoy (The Following), and David Morrissey (The Walking Dead). Ben Whishaw is tremendous
The Christ-like imagery is a little overripe, in my opinion, when those comparisons make themselves for us in the verse--but that would be my only quibble. This is a truly wonderful production of Richard II. Patrick Stewart is marvelous as John of Gaunt. There is no way to do justice to Ben Whishaw's turn as Richard: I watched some of the scenes in the last three acts five or six times. He inhabits Richard, to devastating effect. The verse comes clear in all its force, so terrible and honest that you will probably wake up thinking about it in the middle of the night. If you love the play, you will have to watch this. If you don't love the play, you will after you watch this.
A really fantastic adaption of a great play
Ben Whishaw won a BAFTA for his transformative performance as Richard II, and after watching this adaptation I can understand why. He's amazing, as is the rest of the cast, and the show itself is beautifully filmed and elegiac in tone and imagery. One of the absolute best films/teevee shows I've ever seen, and highly recommended.
