Plot Summary
Within the hazy, smoke-filled room lays a legend named Richard Pryor. His provocative style and one-of-a-kind delivery made him an inspiration and an icon of comedy. In 1971, Pryor's true comedic genius began to shine as he recorded one of his first live performances on stage at the New York Improvisation. It was there that he began his journey to becoming one of the most influential comics of all time. Noted as one of Pryor's most iconic and raw stand-up comedy routines; Richard Pryor: Live & Smokin' features some of his most classic and beloved bits, including "Wino Preacher" and "Willie the Junkie" among others.
Customer Reviews
Funny, Brilliant and no fear!
I'm not a big comedy fan. Currently Sarah Silverman fascinates me because of how far she will go, but I don't laugh. Richard Pryor was one of, at the most, 3-4 comedians in my life time (currently 58) that caused me to laugh spontaneously and I can't think of the other two or three. To me he showed his inner soul more than any comedian I've ever seen.Brave man to do that! He was excitingly funny and I loved the guy!! David

Richard Pryor, Artist
No one else comes close to approximating Pryor's achievements and contributions, though many have tried and many more will try. His comedy was crude and sophisticated, threatening and compassionate, angry and joyful, autobiographical and universal, punishing and healing, all at once. This raw documentary captures him right as he was about to break into superstardom. An essential document of Pryor's career, and of the early 1970s.
