Plot Summary

"From celebrated French director Francois Ozon (UNDER THE SAND, 8 WOMEN) comes RICKY, a hilarious genre-hybrid film about family. When Katie, an ordinary woman, meets Paco, an ordinary man, something magical and miraculous happens: they fall in love. Out of their love comes an extraordinary baby: Ricky. “Perhaps Mr. Ozon’s strangest exploration yet of the meaning of family. Set in a working-class milieu that brings to mind social-realist filmmakers like Ken Loach or Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, the movie leaps into the fairy tale ether with an outlandish twist that Mr. Ozon plays with a straight face” –Lim, NY Times “a marvelously bizarre tale… so rich and tender-hearted it’s almost angelic” -Dermody, Paper “in this season of self-important filmmaking, it's nice to watch a movie that entertains while refusing to take itself too seriously” -Musetto, NY Post

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Because Ozon doesn't develop his characters once Ricky shows his true nature, the movie's slightly overcooked working-class realism quickly morphs into a grotesque story of a mutant baby. The film's two halves feel almost mutually exclusive. – Boyd van Hoeij, Variety, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: What Ricky lacks is a more thorough, consistent examination of maternal bonds. – Melissa Anderson, Village Voice, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: It's not a total success in delivering heartfelt movie satisfaction, but Ozon makes the film with absolute confidence – Andrew L. Urban, Urban Cinefile, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: While there may be some sensational elements about this tale from Francois Ozon, it is essentially an engrossing love story with a twist – Louise Keller, Urban Cinefile, Jun 24, 2010

Not funny

Nothing funny about this movie at all! Horrid, don't waste your time.

Tender and poetic

It's good to break out of our realist molds every now and then to gain perspective on what really matters... This film helps us do just that.
