Plot Summary

In a world where whoever controls the technology controls the truth, and whoever controls the truth can win the war, Lieutenant Web Smith (Wesley Snipes) — a liaison officer with the LAPD — is called into investigate the murder of a young woman in the boardroom of a Japanese corporation in downtown Los Angeles. A mysterious call puts him together with a strange, shadowy figure, Detective John Connor (Sean Connery), who is rumored to be under the influence of the Japanese. Connor becomes his guide (the senpai) and leads the younger detective (the kohai) through the investigation — through futuristic technological secrets, through ancient ways and loyalties. As the liaisons get closer to the truth, political pressure is applied to get them off the case, and they must race against time to resolve it.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: It directs attention not to the internal reasons for America's economic problems, but to inscrutable, generalized, unknown others from abroad, whose yellow skins and strange manners announce their evil purposes as much as their unfair trade practices. – Vincent Canby, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Rotten: It would be nice to see Connery doing something intrinsically interesting instead of trying to make something inherently dull entertaining. And it would be good to see Snipes cut loose more than he is able to here. – Richard Schickel, TIME Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: When working in genre territory before, the idiosyncratic Kaufman has shown a marked tendency to debunk or subvert conventions. Playing it straight here, he brings little to the table. – Todd McCarthy, Variety, Feb 23, 2012

Rotten: As the plot grows more intricate, strangely the tension dissipates, until finally the movie just seems to run out of breath. – David Ansen, Newsweek, Nov 5, 2008
