Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Don't stop believing. Just avoid cliched musicals that try to capture the anarchic spirit of rock with trite commercial re-treads. – Claudia Puig, USA Today, Jun 14, 2012

Fresh: Blessed with unstoppable energy, an undeniably bawdy sense of fun and Tom Cruise in backless leather pants, it takes songs you may never have loved and turns them into a musical that's easy to enjoy. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Jun 14, 2012

Fresh: Just like the music, it's far more fun than it has any right being. – Ian Buckwalter, NPR, Jun 15, 2012

Rotten: Rock of Ages is not a spoof, but it might as well be, given how little there is to root for. – Anthony Lane, New Yorker, Jun 22, 2012

NOTHIN' BUT A GOOD TIME!

"Rock of Ages" is a musical that's definitely not meant to be taken seriously. And seeing as how it proudly celebrates the glam rock music scene of the late 1980s, why should it be? Nearly everyone in the cast - from Catherine Zeta-Jones to Tom Cruise - is fully committed to delivering the most silly and over-the-top performances of their entire careers. They all have their own campy covers of classic rock ballads like Bon Jovi's "Livin' On a Prayer" and Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'", and surprisingly enough, they're not half-bad. In fact, the majority of them are just downright hilarious. Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand, in particular, share one of the funniest scenes in the film in which they perform a rendition of REO Speedwagon's "Can't Fight This Feeling" with laugh-out-loud results. And don't even get me started on Tom Cruise, who easily steals the spotlight with his knock-out portrayal of Stacee Jaxx, a larger-than-life rock star with a super-sized ego to boot. But even his hilariously outrageous performance alone isn't enough to make up for Diego Boneta and Julianne Hough's bland chemistry as the movie's two leads. Sure, they're both attractive and have great singing voices, but when it comes to their unbearably monotone acting abilities, that's a whole other story. Then again, who am I to complain about the performances in a flick where Cruise walks around in a pair of backless leather pants? Case in point, "Rock of Ages" delivers everything you'd expect a rock 'n' roll musical to offer: toe-tapping songs, a likable cast, and a ton of energy. Yes, the story is entirely predictable and the run time is much longer than it should be, but if you genuinely enjoy films like "Grease" and "Hairspray", this is a fun guilty pleasure that's well worth your time.

NOTHIN' BUT A GOOD TIME!!

This movie is so amazing. Hilarious, iconic music, and and amazing storyline. Went and saw it twice in theaters and stood up to dance and sing both times. When I heard it came out, I flipped out and started screaming and singing all over again. BUY THIS MOVIE IT IS TOTALLY WORTH IT!
