Plot Summary

Now on Digital HD. From the directors of Little Miss Sunshine comes an engaging and charming romantic comedy starring Paul Dano and writer-actress Zoe Kazan. Struggling with writer’s block and a lackluster love life, once-famous novelist Calvin (Dano) creates a beautiful fictitious character named Ruby (Kazan), who inspires him. But not only does this bring his work to life – it also brings Ruby to life – literally! Face-to-face with an actual relationship with his once-virtual girlfriend, Calvin must now decide whether to pen this love story or let it write itself. Also starring Annette Bening, Antonio Banderas and Elliott Gould, Ruby Sparks is an inspired coming of age story that proves true love can be magical.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Ruby Sparks flirts with preciousness and has less fun with its premise than it could have, but that's because it's actually a gently touching metaphorical drama about the real essence of love. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Jan 8, 2013

Fresh: If the result feels like a Pinocchio story that spends too much time with Geppetto, or a takedown of narcissism that never breaks free of what it's critiquing, Dano nonetheless makes Calvin compelling company. – Justin Chang, Variety, Jan 8, 2013

Fresh: Sometimes it's worth surrendering to cinematic enchantments, and Ruby Sparks makes a pretty good case for its own magic. – Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News, Jan 8, 2013

Rotten: Kazan winds up indulging in the very wish-fulfillment she initially sets out to deconstruct. – Ann Hornaday, Washington Post, Jan 8, 2013

AN UNCOMMONLY SMART ROMANTIC COMEDY

From one view of the trailer, you'd probably expect "Ruby Sparks" to be a bizarre comedy like 1985's "Weird Science". And in some respects, you'd be right. But for the most part, it's a dark and often challenging film that intelligently explores what happens when fiction coincides with reality. Paul Dano stars as Calvin, a young novelist who achieved phenomenal success early in his career, but is now struggling with his writing - as well as his romantic life. Finally, he makes a breakthrough and creates a character named Ruby (Zoe Kazan) who inspires him both mentally and emotionally. But when Calvin finds Ruby, in the flesh, sitting on his couch about a week later, he is completely astonished that his words have turned into a real, living person. Eventually, the two embark on a rather odd relationship, in which he can make her do things like speak fluent French just by typing it. But what starts out as a wonderful romance gets more tricky as reality hits home. Not only is the premise remarkably original for a romantic comedy in this day and age, but it plays out in a way that feels genuinely heartfelt. Dano and Kazan share a breezy, effortless chemistry that subtly unravels to the point of sudden collapse. It's nearly impossible not to feel the slightest bit sympathetic toward their characters, especially by the film's end. As for the rest of the cast, they each give standout performances of their own as well. In particular, Elliott Gould is a pleasure to watch on screen as the down-to-earth therapist working for Calvin. With its highly intriguing story, relatable characters, and brilliantly quirky dialogue, "Ruby Sparks" is one of the most enjoyable, endearing, and surprisingly poignant films of the year. It may not be to everyone's liking, but for any fan of indie romance, it's worth a watch.
