Plot Summary
From two time Academy Award® winning director Barbara Kopple and Executive Producer Oprah Winfrey. "Running from Crazy" examines the personal journey of Academy Award® nominated actress, author and mental health advocate Mariel Hemingway, the granddaughter of writer Ernest Hemingway, as she strives for a deeper understanding of the suicide and mental illness that have afflicted so many of her family members, including her supermodel/actress sister, Margaux Hemingway and her oldest sister, artist Joan "Muffet" Hemingway. Intimate verite footage and raw, emotional interviews with Mariel herself are interwoven with stunning, rarely seen archival footage of the three Hemingway sisters and their parents. Directed by acclaimed two time Academy Award® winning filmmaker ('Harlan County U.S.A.' and 'American Dream') Barbara Kopple, "Running from Crazy" is a true testament of the sheer power of the human spirit and our ability to rise above the sadness of our past to find a better, happier tomorrow.

Fresh: This heart-wrenching and deceptively conventional documentary manages the tensions in its subject and in the verite approach in a fruitful, illuminating and surprisingly moving way.
Rotten: The narratively jumbled film ... features too many scenes that amount to mere stargazing.
Rotten: The possible hereditary nature of suicide in general and of the seven known Hemingway suicides in particular is lazily poked at; decades of research go unmentioned and unexplored.
Fresh: An artfully arranged account of Hemingway's current life, mixed with footage shot by her late sister Margaux for a 1983 documentary about the family.
