Plot Summary

Xavier (Romain Duris), is thirty years old. He has realized his childhood dream and has become a writer, but he still seems a little lost. Earning a living by writing is not easy and he has developed a few financial problems. He also has trouble settling down with a girl and has one meaningless romantic encounter after another. He lines up a confusing series of jobs related to writing; he's a journalist, a ghostwriter, a soap opera writer or a screenwriter for junk TV series. He does what he can, meaning that he's a little messed up . . . Divided between his ex-girlfriend, his mother, his passing romantic encounters and his lesbian pal, Xavier has a hard time getting his work done properly, which is conceiving and writing a simple, normal love story. This indie drama from IFC is the sequel to L'AUGERGE ESPAGNOLE

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Cédric Klapisch's Russian Dolls has not much on its mind beyond updating the lives of the characters in his 2002 comedy L'Auberge Espagnole. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: Klapisch, who digitally divides frames into collages of memory, is perfectly in tune with our era's cynical freedoms. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Sep 7, 2011

Rotten: As the overlong pic wears on, it's hard to care whether the puzzle pieces of the protags' lives fall into place or not. – Lisa Nesselson, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: The early 30s crisis certainly looks more tenable if it's unfolding among several European capitals, but the movie lacks the specificity and focus of the first. – Carina Chocano, Los Angeles Times, Sep 20, 2007

Wonderful Comedy

It is rare to find a comedy that runs 2:08 hours and has enough substance not to become boring. This movie is such a rarity. Also, the performances are really terrific. I have not seen the first movie but enjoyed nonetheless.

Loves it!

Great sequel. I think I like it better than L'auberge Espanol! Funny and relatable.

great sequel

Loved this sequel, funny screen play, almost lives up to l'auberge espagnole
