Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The film's super-saturated look and quick cutting are mere substitutes for any real sense of intrigue. – Bruce Diones, New Yorker, Mar 23, 2012

Fresh: "Safe House" has just enough bone density to emit some satisfying cracks and pops whenever the action gets going. – Rafer Guzman, Newsday, Feb 10, 2012

Rotten: This is a naive director with so little insight you wonder what comic books he's been reading. – Rex Reed, New York Observer, Feb 14, 2012

Fresh: "Safe House" is a safe bet if you're in the market for a conspiracy-driven action drama. There are times you wish it wasn't quite so safe, but it does deliver the bang for your bucks. – Tom Long, Detroit News, Feb 10, 2012

BEST MOVIE EVA

I used to listen to the rotten tomatoes ratings but Ive been noticing that on some of my favorite movies that they were saying it was bad. And when I looked for their rating for this movie, I was shocked! This is my #1 movie, and its rating from Rotten Tomatoes is a 5.7/10!?!? These people are clearly party poopers

An Entertaining Movie!

This is one of the greatest movies I've ever seen. It was breathtaking, action-packed, and kept me at the edge of my seat the whole movie. Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds share good chemistry together as two mismatched allies. If you want to see a good movie this is the movie for you. It won't dissapoint you.

A SOLIDLY ENTERTAINING ACTION-THRILLER!

As far as modern action movies go, "Safe House" is one of the most genuinely entertaining offerings I've seen in quite a while. Lead stars Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds share fantastic chemistry together as two unlikely allies (one a dangerous renegade on the run, the other a rookie operative from the CIA) who must stay alive long enough to uncover the mercenaries who want them dead. Both of their performances are exceptionally strong throughout, and the action sequences in which they chase, fight and try to kill each other across South Africa are brilliantly and breathlessly filmed. I've also gotta hand it to Vera Farmiga and Brendan Gleeson, who bring remarkable depth to their supporting roles as a couple of high-ranking CIA officers. Gleeson's character, in particular, is surprisingly memorable and full of unpredictability. Besides the believable acting, there's the gritty cinematography, consistently intense score and brutal combat scenes that make this film a total rush. Sure, I'll admit that the premise isn't the most original and the plot does have its holes here and there, but "Safe House" more than makes up for those issues with just about everything else it delivers. In the end, I recommend at least giving this one a rent, especially if you enjoy well-made action-thrillers that keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. And ignore the critics who say it's bad. With a first-rate cast and suspenseful action shots that hardly ever slow down, this is one movie you won't soon forget.
