Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: As always, Franco demonstrates a talent for and interest in composition, performance, and the naked human moment.
Fresh: Despite its modest proportions and chilling finale, Sal is foremost an affectionate tribute, conjuring ample warmth out of relatively little.
Rotten: It functions under the delusion that subtext will magically appear if you linger on a character long enough, and the significance of most of its scenes is nothing if not inscrutable.

Really?
Without a doubt, the biggest waste of time ever committed to film . . or bytes. This dreadful piece of dreck lasts 85 minutes and looks like it was filmed in 90. Anything left on the cutting room floor must have been blank film . . . and would still make a better outtake reel than the movie itself. The "auteur" style of cinematography consists of closeups so close that you only see 3 parts of anyone's face at any one time, e.g., hairline, eyes & nose . . eyes, nose & mouth. . nose, mouth & chin . . and is a "technique" used ad nauseum. Ambience consists of zeroing in on nighttime lighting and going closeup until you see the dust on the camera lens . . yes, dust on the camera lens. . . poor Sal Mineo, murdered once on the street and again on film. If I knew James Franco personally, I'd take him on a rock climbing trip and suggest he cut off his other arm. . . just to make sure this directing bug doesn't happen to him again.
