Plot Summary
Savage Grace, based on the award winning book, tells the incredible true story of Barbara Daly, who married above her class to Brooks Baekeland, the dashing heir to the Bakelite plastics fortune. Beautiful, red-headed and charismatic, Barbara is still no match for her well-bred husband. The birth of the couple's only child, Tony, rocks the uneasy balance in this marriage of extremes. Tony is a failure in his father's eyes. As he matures and becomes increasingly close to his lonely mother, the seeds for a tragedy of spectacular decadence are sown. Spanning 1946 to 1972, the film unfolds in six acts. The Baekelands' pursuit of social distinction and the glittering 'good life' propels them across the globe. In this indie film from IFC, we follow their heady rise and tragic fall against the backdrop of New York, Paris, Cadaques, Mallorca and London.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Savage Grace has been shot with decadent cool creaminess, yet it's a rather slipshod movie.
Rotten: Savage Grace is content to glide along, and while its key performances are intelligent, none of the writing activates these real-life characters fully.
Rotten: It's a horror story, all right, but the reason for telling it remains unclear, and it seems like a waste of Kalin's evident talent.
Rotten: Savage Grace contemplates passion without sampling it, though, and the film quickly becomes as remote as a magazine spread.

Unrivaled Narcissism
Julianne Moore takes on the riskiest roles!! While other actresses are performing in dopey chick-flicks, vampire films and action movies (Hello Angelina!) Moore jumps into the most amazing dramas. She is such a fine, daring actress. This film is worth it just to watch her work a scene. Wow. If you rent it, steel yourself for the most cruel and absurd family life you have ever watched in your most voyeuristic pleasure. What a mess. Why are these great films about such painful, debasing experiences? Because within each film moment lies our darkest reality. The cringing feeling you experience is a struggle between your highest self and your darkest, creepy urges. Watch the humans as they are destroyed by money, boredom and profound emptiness. Honest, it's great---a tour de force!
Inexorable Disintegration
This film was very good at depicting the disintegration of one of america's first families, the Baekelands. From Tony's birth to Brooks' abandonment the movie does a very good job at charting the emotional and psychological course that the characters take through the human condition, just as they physically journey throughout Europe and North America. The ending and introduction of tony's psychological illness were a bit abrupt, but it was still meaningful.
Lacking depth, direction, and intensity
The two main characters are well portrayed, but the viewer is hard pressed to care about anyone.
