Plot Summary

When Mark - a young gay man addicted to sex and drugs - hits bottom, his brother checks him into a Christian retreat in the New Mexico desert. Run by a compassionate husband and wife team, Gayle and Ted have made it their life's mission to cure young men of their "gay affliction" through spiritual guidance. At first, Mark resists, but soon takes the message to heart and begins to bond with his fellow residents...in particular Scott, a mentor charged with guiding Mark through his conversion. As their friendship evolves into romance, Mark and Scott are forced to confront their true selves. Featuring powerful performances and even-handed direction, this acclaimed drama is a subtly nuanced and deeply sympathetic look at both sides of one of the most polarizing debates in America: the conflict and possible reconciliation between homosexuality and Christianity.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Never quite shaking off its aura of second-rate made-for-TV movie, this gay conversion melodrama has a lot of heart but little nerve and no surprise. – Nathan Lee, New York Times, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Even those of us who find anti-homosexual 'deprogramming' to be hideously intolerant and naive may find ourselves oddly relieved that Mark is there. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: This is a modest, thoughtful, independent production of exceptional insight and quietly devastating power. – Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Save Me doesn't poke fun at anyone's beliefs. It takes a more nuanced humanistic approach. – Ruthe Stein, San Francisco Chronicle, Jun 24, 2010

Good movie, but not all that good for the community

It´s another title to add to the painfully slowly growing repertoire of films addressing LGBTQ issues. It showcases some great work from some very talented male (plus one female) actor(s). But sadly, it falls way short of a well-informed, witty look at the interaction between love, sexuality, and biblical doctrine. There are many ways that the film does not satisfy the need for a work of art the moves towards love and acceptance in our society, but they are personal opinions. One matter of fact that I will mention though, is the failure to bring up a definite truth that is central to the films argument(s). In most instances, members of the LGBTQ community engage in self destructive behavior DUE TO THE LARGE AMOUNTS OF PHYSICAL AND PSYCHIC VOILENCE DONE AGAINST THEM BY THE WESTERN SOCIETY, THEIR COMMUNITIES, AND EVEN THEIR FAMILY AND "FRIENDS". Institutions that attempt to change those individuals cite this descructive behavior as evidence that these "people" need help. Well, YES! They need help. How about changing the society to create an environment that is actually SAFE for LGBTQ people? I'll stop here, before I get on my soap box, although I could talk on social issues all day!

WHAT!?!

Okay so this was very disturbing to me. This was a total homophobic movie and I am very disappointed in itunes for promoting it. I am proud to be gay. AND a christian follower. YES WE CAN BE BOTH!

My life

I lived this for so many years and finally broke free. This movie is awesome it shows both parts to the story but it shows you that god is love and he loves me and you no matter what is going on with us. His love saved us. And our dessissions to be who he created saved us.
