Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Stiles and Thomas supply what this movie needs most: a heartbeat.
Rotten: This skin-deep MTV Films production is more about promoting soundtrack sales than social causes.
Fresh: For all its dumb cliches it offers the basic appeal of teen movies: the pleasure of watching kids be kids, acting as they do among themselves instead of how parents and teachers expect them to act.
Rotten: Squanders nice performances by Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick Thomas by confining them and the supporting cast to cookie-cutter roles and hackneyed inner-city subplots.

This movie is one of the best romantic dance movies ive ever seen. I highly recomend it to everyone who just loves to dance and romance stories!
Save the Last Dance
I was 11 years of age the first time I saw this movie. It was much different than many things I'd seen, and I fell in love with it immediately. Though, I must admit, I'm a sucker for dance movies (since this one, anyway). This is highly enjoyable, but it isn't without it's flaws... The biggest problem with this movie is that the opposition to their relationship would have been much worse in real life as it had been in the movie. Sara is forced to move into a new neighborhood and attend a new school when her mother dies, leaving her with a father that was never in her life. Since her mother's death, Sara has given up on her life-long dream: ballet. Her life could not be more different in her new school which is adorned with graffiti, and littered with trash. But Chenille welcomes Sara to her group, and Sara meets Derek, Chenille's brother. Derek is struggling with his past and his future --- he wants to be a doctor, but due to his best friend, Malikai, he's having a hard time getting off the wrong side of the tracks. As fate would have it, Derek and Sara develop feelings for each other, but their relationship is challenged by nearly everyone around them. Can they take the heat together, or will they fall apart because they can't? All the while, Derek encourages Sara to pick up dancing again, and gives a new edge to her dance routine for her audition for Julliard. She had failed her last audition into Julliard. Can she make it this time? It all comes down to one thing: can she save the last dance?
