Plot Summary

One of the most influential movies of all time, the original Scarface is an exciting story of organized crime's brutal control over Chicago during the Prohibition era. Academy Award winner Paul Muni gives an electrifying performance as Tony Camonte, an ambitious criminal with a ruthless drive to be the city's top crime boss. Produced by the legendary Howard Hughes and directed by Howard Hawks, this compelling tale of ambition, betrayal and revenge is a groundbreaking masterpiece that influenced all gangster films to follow. Filmed during the "pre-code" era before censorship shaped the way movies were made, "this powerful gangster film is the most potent of the 1930s" (Leonard Maltin's Classic Movie Guide).

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The slaughter in Scarface, the Shame of a Nation, the Howard Hughes gangster production... is like that of a Shakespearean tragedy – Mordaunt Hall, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: A grisly, exciting gangster picture. – TIME Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Scarface contains more cruelty than any of its gangster picture predecessors, but there's a squarer for every killing. The blows are always softened by judicial preachments and sad endings for the sinners. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Scarface is one of best of the early gangster movies; its wit and building velocity speeds it past Little Caesar and keeps pace with Public Enemy. – Mark Chalon Smith, Los Angeles Times, Jul 30, 2014

come on?

This movie did start if off, but come on.... The 80's version is the one to own. I have been waiting for a long time for itunes to carry this title. There are many others like me I am sure. What is the hold up? My dollars are waiting....

Come On, Guys.

Have any of you even SEEN this one? All this bickering about Al Pacino when little do you know the real deal is right under your nose. Granted, Al Pacino is one of my favorite actors, but his version is nothing compared to this. I'm sure most of you are thinking, ah it's in black and white, it's nearly 80 years old, it must be lame. Not True. This came out right in the middle of the prohibition-era gangster scene. In fact, it was originally banned because of it's violence and realism. In DePalma's 1983 version, in all it's 3 hour duration, it barely scratches the surface that this delves into in half the time. No, if you want to see a REAL mob movie, check THIS out, you won't be disappointed.

1932 Scarface
