Plot Summary

If you've been searching for a "stand-up-and-cheer movie" (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone), a film "not only to enjoy but to cherish" (Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times), look no further – you've found Searching for Bobby Fischer. Josh Waitzkin (Max Pomeranc) is a typical seven-year-old who happens to be a chess prodigy. Joe Mantegna stars as Josh's Father, a sportswriter determined to see his son become a champion. Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: What Bobby Fischer took away, dashing the hopes and the innocence of his acolytes when he spurned chess, may never truly be recaptured. But some of it has found its way to the screen. – Janet Maslin, New York Times, Jun 28, 2010

Fresh: Pomeranc is wonderfully real and wide-eyed as Josh, with a raspy voice and slight lisp recalling Linus from the Peanuts cartoons. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Searching for Bobby Fischer does for chess what The Karate Kid did for martial arts, albeit with considerably more complexity and class. – Rita Kempley, Washington Post, Jun 28, 2010

Fresh: As the boy with a cute little lisp, who emerges from his toy room to mastermind his kings, queens and bishops to tactical victory, Pomeranc imbues the movie with irresistible naivete. – Desson Thomson, Washington Post, Jun 28, 2010

Customer Reviews

I really enjoyed this movie.

This movie has really stuck with me, a nice cast and an involving story. I saw it at the cinema and really enjoyed it. If I happen to catch it, on a weekend afternoon, on TV, I usually get caught up in it and watch the whole thing. I always associate it with Jody Foster's "Little Man Tate", a _fictional_ story, also about a boy prodigy. I get involved in the kid's journey, the excitement or fear of his new circumstances. "Searching for Bobby Fischer" may appeal more to men with it's father/son theme (more than "Little Man Tate").

Truly Amazing Movie

This movie is so amazing. Its a amazing insight into how the mind works across generations.

Sweetness.

I absolutely HATE chess. But yet, I loved this movie. Though I cannot wrap my head around how you move the pieces, this has definately made me motivated about a lot of things in life. You don't need to be a chess-obsesser to absolutely fall in love with this beautiful story.
