Plot Summary
In the spirit of such hit films as Primary Colors and The War Room, SEE HOW THEY RUN is the ultimate insider’s look at campaign politics. In 1999, celebrity Mayor Willie Brown ruled San Francisco and appeared to be a shoo-in for re-election to a second term. Twelve candidates wanted his job, but of these pretenders to the throne, the only threat was a write-in candidate--openly gay city supervisor and stand-up comedian Tom Ammiano. What ensued was a David vs. Goliath showdown mired in intense political backstabbing and media fighting that, lucky for us, was all captured on film. A sharp-witted, scandalous expose of an historic, only-in-San Francisco grassroots campaign, SEE HOW THEY RUN features a host of well-known celebrities and political figures including Reverend Jesse Jackson, Sean Penn, Regis and Kathy Lee, Bill Maher and others to ultimately reveal all the behind-the-scenes mud-slinging, back room brawls and daily dramas that together helped shape this one-of-a-kind race.
Customer Reviews
"See How They Run"
Love this film! Funny, intelligent, provocative... perfectly captures San Francisco's quirky political scene and the city's eclectic spirit.
Fantastic documentary
This movie is a political whirlwind. A fantastic documentary. The timeline of the race is precise and the sequencing of the footage is spot on. See How They Run highlights modern campaigning and politics at its best. Hoping to see more of this director in the future. Amazing work.
Great film!
I have watched this movie 4 times. Each time it gets better and better. I saw it recently and still think it is relevant today many years after the actual election. I find myself getting lost in the film and not remembering how it turns out. It is a great film by a young film maker. I highly recommend See How They Run to anyone who loves politics or documentaries.
