Plot Summary
Steven is an aging white man with "yellow fever", who is obsessed with marrying any Asian woman, imagining the archetype of the shy, giggling, obedient Asian wife. Sandy is the young, feisty, ambitious Chinese bride he finds online. Debbie is the Chinese American filmmaker who becomes confidante and translator in this precarious union. As they navigate the vast cultural and language divide through a challenging year, the three come together in a thoroughly modern love story. A PBS Indies / Independent Lens selection.

Informative, thoughtful, and honest
The documentary was great not only because it was well done and thoughtful, but it really addressed the issue of inter-racial marriage (between an older white American and a younger foreign-born Asian woman) in an unbiased and honest way. Is the white guy really a creeper? Is the Asian girl really a dragon lady who marries for US residency? The director walks us through the relationship between Steve and Sandy while at the same time tells us about her own struggle as an Asian American woman. The journey is both humorous and unexpected.
I personally know four such inter-racial couples (older white American husband & younger foreign-born Asian wife) from a local Chinese congregation. There seems to be at least one new couple like that every year and I often have ambivalent feelings toward such couple as an Asian American. I have always wondered about their relationships and how absurd the relationship appeared across racial, cultural, and language barriers. This film has really helped me think about these couples more as complex fellow human beings instead of just the “creeper white guy and the gold digging Chinese woman”.
I highly recommend this movie to anyone who is studying the issue of inter-racial marriage. Also, Debbie’s method of filming and narration would serve as a great role model for any independent film maker. In short, well done! I love the movie.
Great film
The movie plays fine. There are absolutely no issues with it (otherwise it wouldn't have been uploaded, right?), so don't let this be a factor in buying it.
It was a really charming film and I think it provides an interesting perspective into some of the small differences and customs in American and Chinese relationships.
Captivating!
The movie freezes when played through a 32 bit version of iTunes on OS X 10.6. But it works perfectly when I play on the 64 bit version of iTunes on OS 10.8. Hope that helps anyone else running into the freezing. As for the film, it's insightful and entertaining, and I highly recommend it!
