Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Pretty darn good, despite its smarty-pants aura. – Michael O'Sullivan, Washington Post, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: A lot rides on coincidence. Or fate. Or the magic pull of the moon. It all makes sense in the end. – Eric Harrison, Houston Chronicle, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: What distinguishes Julio Medem's humid, magic-realist eroticon from the average soft-core fare is its writer-director's playful interest in storytelling as a form of sexual sublimation and release. – Carrie Rickey, Philadelphia Inquirer, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Perhaps our confusion is part of the whole idea, but Sex and Lucia would have a lot more impact if there were someone to give a damn about. – Eleanor Ringel Gillespie, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Jun 24, 2010

Sex and Lucia - my #1 movie forever

I saw this film back in 2003 when I still lived in Europe and I watched a lot of foreign/independent movies. First I was not so interested, the title was not overly catchy and somehow I didn't even plan to watch it. But then I remember one of my friends told me she watched it with her husband and parents and how awkward she felt. Then it started to be interesting. So I watched it. And since then, I`m not coming off from my admiration for Julio Medem and began to watch all of his movies. By now, I think I can tell, he is my favorite director and I love most of his work: Sex and Lucia, Lovers of the Arctic cycle, Cows, Earth.. I didn't enjoy "Room in Rome" so much, but forgave him:-)
I love Sex and Lucia, because the story had million twists, the characters were very realistic, having a lot of defects and weaknesses but were still very much lovable. It was shot in a beautiful way, you almost feel the sun burning your skin. Also the film is very openly describing lust and sexuality, which we admit or not is part of our lives. Very important that although there is a lot of lust but also a lot of connections & destiny. "Suddenly, you fall in a hole and it goes right back to the middle". A must-see masterpiece!

Sensual footage but does love conquer all?

This movie is an intriguing quasi thriller/erotic love story. Two women and a man are bound by their memories and live to find each other. Unfortunately, the ending only speaks to the desperation of the human spirit. I would watch it again and recommend it but found it profoundly disturbing on the topic of "love."

Muy buena

Les recomiendo esta película!
