Plot Summary
BAFTA nominee Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) stars in this ripsnorting and unapologetic portrait of mercurial British punk rock pioneer, Ian Dury (Ian Dury and The Blockheads). Funny, heartbreaking and very rock-and-roll, this directorial debut of The Road to Guantanamo co-director Mat Whitecross chronicles everything from Dury's troubled childhood and battle with debilitating polio, to the effects of his fame on his relationships and fatherhood. Also starring Naomie Harris (Pirates of the Caribbean, 28 Days Later), Ray Winstone (Beowulf, The Departed, Sexy Beast), Olivia Williams (The Sixth Sense, Rushmore) and Toby Jones (Harry Potter, Frost/Nixon).

Rotten: Somehow this well-intentioned film cannot help but turn an uncompromisingly original artist into a formula.
Fresh: It's an energetic and vivacious film that will appeal to fans of punk rock worldwide and should find its place in the pantheon of great music-film biographies.
Fresh: Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll ticks all the music biopic boxes, but Whitecross wisely ramps things up by looking at Dury's life with the same sort of random, chaotic vision that both blessed and cursed the man himself.
Fresh: While it feels slapdash rather than properly punk-collage ragged, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll is an honest job, and it makes a good case for including Dury's work and personality in any Brit-culture list of Reasons to be Cheerful.
