Fresh: Shall We Dance?' holds forth the sunny possibility that beyond the most timid exterior there may be a tangoing Walter Mitty to be found. – Janet Maslin, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

I

I first found this movie when Siskel and Ebert gave it two thumbs up at the end of one of their shows. When those two agreed you could almost never go wrong. This is no exception. It's sweet, funny, and completely engaging. For those of us that aren't especially good dancers, it's delightful. For those of us that find life full of challenge, it's got just the right inspirational tone. We can identify, at some point, with every character in the film. I just bought it. Go ahead and rent it but be prepared to put it in your library. The American version several years later, to be honest, completely misses the mark.

Shall We Dance

A wonderfully moving movie. It was recommended as a 'must see' before visiting Japan, but you certainly don't need to be going there to enjoy this truly beautiful movie. Rated among the top 10 Japanese movies, ever. Sub titles, but they will not drive you nuts. Sarah

first impressions and lasting impressions

The really cool thing about this movie is that all the peculiar things that are at the beginning of the movie, that we would think are just odd or dysfunctional, and gradually (for the most part, some suddenly) revealed to have genuine background and motivation. The lead performance is pretty remarkable--note how his overall body language and mannerisms change over the course of the film. If you don't want to take dance lessons after this movie, well, I don't know what.
