Plot Summary

From the duo that brought you Dumb and Dumber and There's Something About Mary comes a hilarious film about "inner beauty"! Hal (Jack Black) is a man so shallow that all he cares about are the bodies of the women he dates. After being hypnotized into seeing the beauty that exists even in the least physically appealing women, he now thinks he's found true love. But what he doesn't realize is that his gorgeous girlfriend (Gwyneth Paltrow) is actually a 300-pound-not-so-hottie!

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The film itself is little more than a series of fat jokes. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Nov 24, 2006

Fresh: May be the best Farrellys movie yet, even though it doesn't live up to the pair's usual level of uproarious, crass comic genius. – Stephanie Zacharek, Salon.com, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: Not only light on laughs but discomfitingly didactic in its disgust. – J. Hoberman, Village Voice, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: It gets away with fat jokes at the same time it seems to be on the side of the angels and inner beauty. – Bob Graham, San Francisco Chronicle, Jun 18, 2002

The Sweetest Movie

Have you ever been upset by the way that movies are cast, so that every actor and actress is beautiful, whether they are good or evil? Sure, the seductress may have blond hair and the nice girl the man falls in love with have the girl-next-door look, but in the end every character had outer beauty, the question was what they had on the inside. This beautifully casted movie starts out with a man who has clearly seen too many movies and wants every woman he's with to be a 'hottie,' but Jack Black (who plays the role of this desperate, superficial man) convincingly transitions himself to being attracted to woman who are beautiful on the outside (but only to him) and on the inside. After watching this film, one feels like they can stop caring about what people look like on the outside because what is on the inside really is what matters. Some of the characters that are beautiful on the inside really do look ugly (being obese, having whiskers, etc.) and one can see through this movie that if you look at people through a different perspective, your perspective on their outer beauty really can change. I would highly recommend seeing this movie at least once because it is acted out convincingly, it does not use much vulgarity to make its point, and it teaches one of the most important lessons you can learn in life to make yourself a better person- the only beauty that matters is your inner beauty.

What a Surprise

I had wanted to see this movie when it came out but, for whatever reason, I wasn't able to. Having finally gotten to watch it I'm glad I did. The characters are adorable, the story is decent, and the fantasy is supported throughout the movie. If you, or anyone you know, is overweight, you might consider watching this as it illustrates some of the defensive behaviors (like disblief) some heavy people have when someone is showering them with attention. The movie may make a jerk near you more conscious of other people's feelings.
