Plot Summary
Acclaimed director George Stevens’ legendary rendition of the quintessential Western myth earned six Academy Award® nominations, and made Shane one of the classics of the American cinema. The story brings Alan Ladd, a drifter and retired gunfighter, to the assistance of a homestead family terrorized by a wealthy cattleman and his hired gun (Jack Palance). In fighting the last decisive battle, Shane sees the end of his own way of life. Mysterious, moody and atmospheric, the film is enhanced by the intense performances of its splendid cast.

Classic Western
This film is the kind of epic, huge western that helped give the genre credibility beyond "cowboys and indians" bubblegum action flicks. This is a great movie, it takes place in the american west of the late 1800's, and has a great pace, slow build, and confidence that the viewer is ready for the whoe story. I would have to say that the first two reviews were a bit strange for me to accept. This movie is different from most westerns in the same way that Unforgiven was a shock when it came out. It discards a lot of the cliches rampant at the time for the genre, while still immortalizing others-like bad guys wear black. Shane is a quiet, complex character, and this film was a more mature look at the reality of the conflicts of the time, less romantic, more gritty. If it doesn't seem at all gritty to a younger viewer, just remember that it's all in context-at the time, the death of farmer Torrey was a shock, as mentioned in the synopsis. I recommend this film to a viewer with patience for story development. This ain't no Jerry Bruckheimer MTV/ADD 2 minute action scene after 2 minute action scene bubblegum flick- this is a developed human story with conflict and tension, for all parties involved. The landscapes are a lost part of america, and worth watching for that alone. Peace
One of the best Westerns ever made
Classic film by a great director. One of the best western films ever made. Alan Ladd and Jack Palance in a well written and acted drama. Keep these type of films coming please!
One of the best and most famous
Iconic in its scope, this film is probably one of the best and most famous westerns ever made. It’s classic good guy (Alan Ladd) versus bad guy (Jack Palance in the role that made him famous). Brandon DeWilde’s final line in the film (“Come back, Shane”) has become another icon of Hollywood history. Filmed in Technicolor, cinematographer Loyal Griggs’ photography is absolutely gorgeous. Although somewhat dated and simplistic in the eyes of today’s viewers, it is nevertheless, THE classic 50’s Hollywood western, and well worth watching for those who have never seen it.
