Plot Summary

Ambitious New York attorney Sam (Daniel Henney of TV's THREE RIVERS, X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE) is transferred to Shanghai on assignment, partially because he's Chinese-American. A fish-out-of-water, he stumbles into a legal mess that could spell the end of his career. With help from a beautiful relocation specialist (Eliza Coupe of TV's HAPPY ENDINGS, TV's SCRUBS), a well-connected foreign businessman (Bill Paxton of TV's HATFIELDS & MCCOYS, TWISTER), a clever but unassuming journalist (Geng Le), and a street-smart assistant (Zhu Zhu of CLOUD ATLAS), Sam might just save his job, discover romance, and learn to appreciate the many wonders Shanghai has to offer. Also starring Alan Ruck (TV's SPIN CITY, FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF).

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Though Mr. Hsia, a television alumnus who also wrote the script, has created a somewhat predictable story infused with stereotypes old and new, he gains mileage from light humor, buoyant energy and some appealing performers. – Andy Webster, New York Times, Feb 14, 2013

Fresh: [A] modest charmer. – Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times, Feb 22, 2013

Rotten: Shanghai Calling eventually reveals itself to be just another stale tale about the virtue of morality over ambition ... – Nick Schager, Village Voice, Feb 12, 2013

Rotten: A clear affection for its subject and setting help deepen Daniel Hsia's otherwise shallow romantic comedy. – Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News, Feb 14, 2013

Best Romantic Comedy yet!

Shanghai Calling SOLD OUT almost every screening during the 2012 Film Festivals. In my opinion, this will be the best Romantic Comedy of 2013!

Refreshing

Felt like I was watching an old 90's rom com laced with modern themes and the beauty of Shanghai. Amazingly fun little movie.... Left me wanting to buy a ticket to Shanghai!

Cute, Thought Provoking RomCom

I thought the message behind the move was very powerful. It really gave an interesting twist on "Immigration" as a whole. We see people of all cultures here in the USA, but very seldom do we see the lives of Americans overseas. I thought it was interesting that overseas there is "AmericaTown" or "CanadaTown". The whole battle with the language is was also fascinating. Its a delightful RomCom, but I really came out of it with so much more. If anything.. this movie really made me think. <3 You will most certainly enjoy it. <3
