Plot Summary

Shepard & Dark tells the story of the unlikely decades-spanning friendship between Academy Award-nominated actor and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Sam Shepard (The Right Stuff, Buried Child) and eccentric, reclusive deli clerk Johnny Dark. As the two men come together to publish their lifelong correspondence at the University of Texas Press - hundreds of eloquent handwritten letters dating back to the early 1960s - their shared memories, literary ties and one-time family bonds emerge in an indelible documentary portrait of a complex friendship rarely depicted on screen.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Both good times and bad bubble back up to the surface, giving the film an unguarded honesty. – Chris Nashawaty, Entertainment Weekly, Sep 27, 2013

Fresh: There is just enough of Shepard's lyrical prose and Dark's depth and humor to whet the appetite. You walk out wanting to read at least a few of them beginning to end. – Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times, Oct 10, 2013

Fresh: A disarming but low-impact documentary that amounts to an odd dual biopic, "Shepard & Dark" can feel a bit like intruding on a conversation between two old friends. – Kyle Smith, New York Post, Sep 27, 2013

Fresh: The stress of their reunion yields fascinating insights into Shepard's work. – Andrea Gronvall, Chicago Reader, Oct 3, 2013

Great, moving portraits of two very interesting ,different men

Highly recommended for Shepard fans and all interested in men's friendships.

example of US poor grammar

When the opening line of the trailer is Mr. Shepard saying "John and Me have been writing to each other since 1963" I get the distinct impression that this so called great writer needs some lessons in correct grammar.
