Plot Summary

Riz Ahmed (Four Lions, Trishna) takes the title role of $hifty in a screenplay charting an action packed 24 hours in the life of a young drug dealer in London. The sudden return home of his best friend sets into motion a chain of events that see $hifty’s life quickly spiral out of control. Stalked by a customer desperate to score at all costs, and with his family about to turn their back on him for good, $hifty must out-run and out-smart a rival drug dealer, played by Jason Flemyng (Snatch, X-Men First Class), intent on setting him up for a big fall. As his long time friend Chris, played by Daniel Mays (The Bank Job, Atonement), confronts the dark past he left behind him, $hifty is forced to face up to the violent future he’s hurtling towards. BAFTA-nominee and acclaimed stage and screen actress Francesca Annis (Revolver, The Libertine) also stars as Valerie, an addict who brings out the protective side in $hifty.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Creevy eschews the woozy, arthouse ambience of Duane Hopkins' Better Things - another portrait of a drug-decimated community - for naturalistic dialogue and performances within carefully framed and composed shots; properly cinematic, grown-up direction. – Ali Catterall, Film4, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Good central performances in this highly, entertaining character-driven debut. – Dan Jolin, Empire Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Creevy's fine ear for dialogue, sensitive and productive direction of actors and confident control of tone is all the more impressive for being delivered under the short schedule and tight budgetary exigencies. – Wally Hammond, Time Out, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: The production values are lo-fi but spirited performances, matey humour and an edgy authenticity carry the story. – Wendy Ide, Times [UK], Jun 24, 2010

Riz Ahmed is AWESOME!!!

This is truly a British urban film on par with TRAINSPOTTING. Lighter at heart but pulses at the same rate as any other top grossing gritty British urban films. It's a must watch as both Riz Ahmed and Daniel Mays shows you on screen and reality the intrinsic value of true friendship and loyalty!! Watch out for ERAN CREEVY, he's the next Danny Boyle and Matthew Vaughn!

Really Great English Crime Film

I really enjoyed this movie when I saw it in England on a trip to see some friends. It's got a great story and is acted incredibly well. It's got action and suspense and at ti's heart its really about relationships - between $hifty and his recently-returned best friend, $hifty and his family and $hifty and his drug dealer boss. If you like English Crime movies like IN BRUGES or GANGSTER #1 or even SNATCH, this movie is for you.

One of the best drug films I have seen in a LONG while...

Using realistic characters, compelling dialogue, and a gritty plot line, Shifty manages to create a story that will resonate with audiences from every generation. As an avid lover of cinema I can say that this is one of the best films about drug culture that I have seen since Spike Lee's "25th Hour." I recommend this film to anyone who has enjoyed the films such as: Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream, or Layer Cake. This is a MUST SEE.
