Plot Summary
A riveting portrait of the great writer whose stories became the basis of the Broadway musical Fiddler on the Roof. Sholem Aleichem: Laughing in the Darkness tells the tale of the rebellious genius who created an entirely new literature. Plumbing the depths of a Jewish world locked in crisis and on the cusp of profound change, he captured that world with brilliant humor. Sholem Aleichem was not just a witness to the creation of a new modern Jewish identity, but one of the very men who forged it.

Fresh: It is a rich, beautifully organized and illustrated modern history of Eastern European Jewry examined through the life and work of the author, born Sholem Rabinovich in Pereyaslav (near Kiev) in 1859.
Fresh: Joseph Dorman's intelligent if conventional bio-doc of Sholem Aleichem proves particularly revealing, since the famed, dandyish Yiddish writer led a life as full of colorful ironies as the motormouth schlemiels that populate his stories.
Fresh: In the spirit of the Sholem Aleichem oeuvre, Laughing in the Darkness is a collective family album.
Fresh: Wonderfully rich, like one of Tevye's monologues, Joseph Dorman's "Sholem Aleichem: Laughing in the Darkness" captures the spirit of a man and his times.

Propoganda at its best
Enough said. In the 21st century, one would hope we would have gotten over ethnic propaganda, but alas it continues for some.
LAUGHING IN THE DARKNESS
THIS IS PROFOUNDLY WISE AND HUMAN MATERIAL. TO ENTER INTO THIS PARTICULAR WORLD IS TO GROW, NOT JUST IN KNOWLEDGE OF ONE ETHNIC ENTITY, BUT OF HUMANITY. A BEAUTIFUL AND WORTHWHILE FILM.
