Plot Summary
Henry Carter (Kevin Spacey) is a psychiatrist with an A-list clientele, including a once-famous actress (Saffron Burrows), an insecure young writer (Mark Webber), and a comically obsessive-compulsive superagent (Dallas Roberts). Henry is not in a good place, however. He has been asked to take his first pro bono case, a troubled teenage girl from a neighborhood far from the Hollywood hills. Considering his present state of mind, is he ready for the real-life troubles of a young woman who loves the world of movies from which he has become so jaded?

Rotten: Director Jonas Pate and screenwriter Thomas Moffett have turned this strongly cast, potentially smart tale of personal intersection among a mostly rarefied group of Los Angelenos into an irritating and unconvincing slog.
Rotten: There really was a much better comedy here than melodrama.
Rotten: I'm not his manager, but I wonder if Kevin Spacey would profit from laying off the sardonic, disaffected, emotionally numb characters for a while. They're criminally easy for him at this point in his career.
Rotten: Shrink is no worse than the average Hollywood comedy. But it shows, more obviously than most, the bankruptcy of standard-issue American pop narrative, circa 2009.

Just see it.
I got on here looking to download a funny movie even though i knew that's not what i needed to make myself feel better. This movie may seem like it is geared toward a certain type of person at first. You won't find any slap stick humor or meaningless topless sex scenes. You WILL find terribly powerful character studies of people who just are not happy. Some of them know it and have absolutely no idea what to do about it, some of them are begging for help, and some are denying they have any problems at all. I think everyone falls into one of those categories. Maybe this sounds too depressing and negative for you. I promise you, if you pay attention and you listen, you will not walk away from this film with anything short of appreciation and hope. Appreciation for the people in our lives that see us drowning and throw out a rope. And hope that if you are willing to be pulled out of the water, or better yet pull yourself out, things might be better in the morning.
I'm glad I didn't go for a cheap laugh. I needed this movie.

I found this movie to both capture the hollowness of the dark moments in our lives and at the same time embody a common thread between us all that serves as hope. It doesn't hurt that i've lived that life in LA for many years and the characters are very, very accurate.
One of the best movies of the year.
I'll admit, I've never written a review for a movie before. In addition, when it comes to movies I'm usually a comedy type of guy. Although this movie was by far one of the best movies I've seen in a long, long time. Granted, I'm only 16, so saying that it was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time might not hold very much weight. However, I watch several movies a week.
Shrink strongly reminded me of the movie Crash, which was nominated for several awards. When I first started watching, I used my teenage "judging" abilities and immediatly characterized the different characters as unlikable. Although, being similar to the movie crash, towards the end they all ended up bringing out the best in each other and helping out one another in their own way. Shrink had the perfect ending, and when the credits started rolling I immediatly decided to write a review. I strongly reccommend buying, or at least renting, this movie. You will not regret spending your time or money.
