Plot Summary

It was the last days of LCD Soundsystem - one of the most celebrated bands of its generation. On April 2nd, 2011, the band played its final show at Madison Square Garden. New York Magazine called the concert “a marvel of pure craft” and TIME magazine lamented “we may never dance again.” SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS documents this once-in-a-lifetime performance and also reveals an intimate portrait of band leader James Murphy as he navigates the ramifications of his decision to end LCD Soundsystem.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: "Shut Up" is graceful in its depiction of the performance, neither uncomfortably intimate nor shy. – Jon Caramanica, New York Times, Jul 26, 2012

Fresh: Much like the band's self-conscious synth-pop itself, Shut Up is initially satiric but ultimately disarming in its emotional resonance. – Rob Nelson, Variety, Feb 6, 2012

Fresh: Shut Up and Play the Hits manages to effectively display the power of that final concert while putting the band's leader into thoughtful cultural perspective. – Ian Buckwalter, NPR, Jul 17, 2012

Fresh: It's sometimes touching, sometimes really loud, and often both. – Ty Burr, Boston Globe, Sep 13, 2012

It was good. really good

Saw this on the one night showing at the cable car cinema in providence with my dad, who had never heard of the band. Both him and I loved it, the cinematography, the music, and the way in which the conclusion of LCD was told. I have been a fan for a lil while now, but my father who previously listened to some of the most lame artists, such as Cher....., now frequently listens to LCD on Pandora and really digs the scene. Go see it, is what I'm saying.

Pretty Good, but….

I'm an old fart who, nevertheless , is not particularly nostalgic and prefers to listen to contemporary artists. As such, I would get the LCD SS cds upon their release. I must have been missing something though -good stuff, but not exactly the second coming. In the film as well I saw a lot of people who mourned the passing of a band that failed to convince me of their own greatness. To get nostalgic, this wasn't The Last Waltz. Nicely filmed though.

Almost felt like clapping

Just finished watching it and felt like I was there when they were playing "All My Friends" and was dancing in my chair. When they finished playing it I felt as if should have clapped. It was just so amazing. So sad that I missed the actual show although I have seen them live twice. Nothing compares to this last show. So sad.
