Plot Summary

SIDE BY SIDE, a new documentary produced by Keanu Reeves, takes an in-depth look at this revolution. Through interviews with directors, cinematographers, film students, producers, technologists, editors, and exhibitors, SIDE BY SIDE examines all aspects of filmmaking - from capture to edit, visual effects to color correction, distribution to archive. At this moment when digital and photochemical filmmaking coexist, SIDE BY SIDE explores what has been gained, what is lost, and what the future might bring.

Fresh: For a film geek this movie is absolute heaven, a dream symposium in which directors, cinematographers, editors and a few actors gather to opine on the details of their craft.

Informative yet boring
It was nice to see the progression of digital filmmaking over the last few years. But the documentary had no real point of view beyond "Digital... the possibilities are endless!" Reeves wasn't very probing or provocative, and the interviews weren't very engaging. An odd cast of characters too. It felt like Greta Gerwig had nearly as much face time as George Lucas.
I would've loved to have seen Herzog or Errol Morris' take. Jeff Nichols just made an amazing movie on film for $5 million. Malick. Woody Allen. Peter Jackson. PT Anderson. Sofia Coppola. Even Tarantino. I wanted to see the great storytellers talk about the compromises of media and whether technology solves problems or just creates new ones.
It's a hugely rich topic that deserves way more depth than Reeves or Kenneally were capable of uncovering.
Couldn't get enough!
Documentary about film versus digital, amazing! The ground that's covered is informative eye-opening and educational, not only can this conversation go on forever but it isn't biased in anyway. Best documentary I have seen in years.
Entertaining and Informative
Side by Side is an enjoyable look at the digital vs. film debate. Movie buffs and film students will learn a lot from this film.
