Plot Summary

The sizzling sands of Malibu set the scene as Monroe meets a beautiful marine biologist and is recruited to play California's hottest new sport, professional volleyball. Soon he's competing against the big boys (played by actual pro circuit stars Sinjin Smith and Randy Stoklos). But it's only when Monroe teams with Zack Barnes (TV's Thirtysomething's Peter Horton), the original "King of the Beach" that he learns just how much fun success - and teamwork - can truly be.

Customer Reviews

Sideout was for Volleyball what North Shore was to Surfing!!!

Cameos galore, including a co-starring role for the legendary Randy Stoklos as the vaunted "Rollo Vincent", that doesn't quite add to the credibility of the film the way producers surely would have hoped... A cult classic that only volleyball enthusiasts can truly appreciate; in other words no real sports crossover appeal. Most of the volleyball scenes are enjoyable, albeit somewhat unrealistic. For example, Monroe Clark, a midwestern basketball star (played by C. Thomas Howell who I love for this part) who has never picked up a volleyball on the hardwood much less on the sand, trains for a few weeks and (SPOILER ALERT!!) wins the Cuervo Gold Crown Classic with a washed up former King of the Beach who hasn't played on the sand in years. Sorry... not gonna happen. And Clark's match-winning 360-degree set for the championship was a total lift... The above not withstanding I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! Total nostalgia for me. I used to watch this movie every night before a volleyball tournament, and had iPods been around in the early 90s, I would have watched it again on the way. 90s-fabulous!!! Love it!
