Plot Summary

Jolene Reedy (Oscar® winner Charlize Theron) is a disillusioned single mother prone to bad men and reckless behavior. Her younger brother James (Nick Stahl of IN THE BEDROOM, CARNIVÀLE) is a weak- willed underachiever who can’t hold a job. But when Jolene abandons her 12-year-old daughter (AnnaSophia Robb of BRIDGE TO TEREBITHIA) with James, uncle and niece make a fateful decision to flee to the farm of James and Jolene’s abusive father (Academy Award® nominee Dennis Hopper). In a past plagued by dark secrets, can family prove to be the most desperate bond of all? Oscar® nominee Woody Harrelson co-stars in this acclaimed Sundance Festival Premiere Selection about the cycles of love, loss and waking up to the first day of the rest of your life.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Filmed mostly in winter, in browns, grays and soiled whites, Sleepwalking sustains a mood of unrelenting bleakness, wearing its aesthetic of desolation like a badge of integrity. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Portentous and dull, the film features one of the worst over-the-top performances by Dennis Hopper, who plays an abusive father. His role upends what could have been a mildly interesting family drama. – Claudia Puig, USA Today, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Terrific performances and a bleak, riveting look at life on the economic fringes eventually gives way to an overly familiar tale of abuse, denial and catharsis that feels like warmed over Sam Shepard minus the poetry. – Kevin Crust, Los Angeles Times, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Sleepwalking is a frustrating case because Stahl, Robb and Theron all give performances that are subtle, delicate and smart -- it's just that they're steamrollered by the movie's relentlessness. – Stephanie Zacharek, Salon.com, Jun 24, 2010

Great movie

Music is incredible, cinematography is very dark and bleak but it matches up with the setting and theme of the movie. Acting is superb. Well done
