Plot Summary

On the road to womanhood in the '70's, Vivian (Natasha Lyonne) is encountering two big bumps; her strangely nomadic family, always on the move yet desperate to stay in the Beverly Hills school district, and her blossoming sexuality. Add Viv's vivacious visiting cousin (Marisa Tomei) to the mix, and you've got an explosive coming-of-age story that proves you don't have to be rich to have first-class fun.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: All of [the cast members], especially Ms. Lyonne and Mr. Arkin, project a crazy sincerity that turns this personal and nostalgic comedy into a very true story indeed. – Janet Maslin, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: What lifts this brash comedy above the vulgar herd is Tamara Jenkins in a heartfelt feature debut as writer and director. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Jan 12, 2007

Fresh: Funny, well acted comedy from a new director whose career shuld be watched – Emanuel Levy, Variety, Jul 23, 2011

Rotten: There's an alchemy that can transform personal experience into a great film, but it was nowhere nearby when Tamara Jenkins wrote and directed this lacklustre first feature. – Ray Conlogue, Globe and Mail, Jun 24, 2010
