Plot Summary
Playing out like a heist thriller spiced with cutting-edge animation and jaw-dropping real-life surveillance footage, Havana Marking’s Smash & Grab is an exclusive all-access pass into the world of the infamous gang of international jewel thieves known as the ‘The Pink Panthers.’ The mysterious Panthers have stolen nearly a billion dollars worth of jewels from boutiques in the world's most opulent cities, including London, Dubai, Paris, and even the red carpet at Cannes. Featuring never-before-seen interviews with key members of the gang, this provocative documentary explores the gang’s incredible history and details their highly charged game of cat-and-mouse with global police forces working furiously to stop them.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: The insider's level of detail that gives so many good crime movies their bite is also what makes the documentary "Smash and Grab: The Story of the Pink Panthers" guiltily absorbing.
Fresh: Havana Marking's imaginatively made documentary is a gripping portrait of a daring international jewel-theft ring.
Fresh: The world's most successful ring of diamond thieves is inventively and insightfully explored in the documentary "Smash and Grab: The Story of the Pink Panthers."
Rotten: Smash & Grab is so impressed with The Panthers, whose reputation has a (largely phony) Robin Hood element, that it often tips into unjustified fawning.

Entertaining documentary
This insiders look at an organized crime ring has its fascinating moments, though I agree with the RT reviewer who said the movie seems a little too spliced together at times. That notwithstanding, the film kept me enthralled the entire time.
Not Good
This film makes incredible subject matter boring. There are several great stories ruined here and and unwatchable film is the result.
Mostly Filler
There was a good story here, but the filmmaker didn't find it. Due to the lack of actual facts and substance, most of the movie consisted of filler: old tourist and news film clips of Yugoslavia, slow typing of titles onto the screen, scenic location shots that didn't relate to the story. When the film got around to the interesting part--interviewing two of the group member--they were cartooned, which detracted from the authenticity.
The highly pixellated re-enactments, the grainy security camera footage and the cartoon representations left me hungry for something real, detailed and nuanced.
This story would have made for an interesting read if it were a two-page article that stuck to the facts and transcribed the interviews. As a movie it fell short.
