Plot Summary

Make no bones about it -- Disney's Snow Dogs is a hilarious action-packed comedy your whole family will love. Eight adorable but mischievous dogs get the best of dog hater Ted Brooks (Cuba Gooding Jr.) when he leaves his successful Miami Beach dental practice for the wilds of Alaska to claim his inheritance -- seven Siberian huskies and a border collie -- and discover his roots. As Ted's life goes to the dogs, he rises to the occasion and vows to learn to mush with his inheritance. Totally out of his element, he faces challenges he's never dreamed of. There's a blizzard, thin ice, an intimidating crusty old mountain man named Thunder Jack (James Coburn), the Arctic Challenge Sled Dog Race that's only two weeks away, and a life-and-death rescue. This fish-out-of water, tail-wagging comedy is nothing but doggone good fun and a celebration of family -- both human and canine!

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Five screenwriters are credited with the cliche-laden screenplay; it seems as if each watered down the version of the one before. – Claudia Puig, USA Today, Jan 18, 2002

Rotten: Instantly forgettable. – Joe Leydon, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: What Faustian bargain did Gooding make, forcing him to star in this insipid fish-out-of-water comedy that paints him as a Bolton fan? – Robert K. Elder, Chicago Tribune, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: There's little to recommend Snow Dogs, unless one considers cliched dialogue and perverse escapism a source of high hilarity. – Neva Chonin, San Francisco Chronicle, Jun 18, 2002

THIS MOVIE IS GOOD!

This movie is funny. It's a very good comedy. It's a really great family movie.

If you're waiting for the widescreen DVD....download this!

Snow Dogs is one of my favorite movies that Disney has released in recent years. The premise (a Miami dentist inheriting seven Siberian Huskies from his late mother residing in Alaska) is intriguing, the scenery is attractive, and several parts of the movie (particularly when the dentist, Ted Brooks, first meets the dogs and tries to sled with them, and the dream sequence) provide plenty of laughs. The performances by Cuba Gooding, Jr., Nichelle Nichols and the other actors are very good, and I particularly admire James Coburn in one of his final roles. Best of all, unlike the DVD (which so far is only available in fullscreen) this version is presented in the same widescreen format that was used when this movie was first shown in the theaters. A special thanks to Disney and iTunes for this presentation. Perhaps soon, if enough people buy this movie at iTunes, Disney will finally come to its senses and release this movie in widescreen on DVD and/or Blu-Ray. This movie certainly deserves it! (One more suggestion: Michael Bolton's cover version of the Stevie Wonder song "As" at the end of the movie was excellent. I tried searching for it but cannot find it on any of the online music sites. Perhaps iTunes could try to get the rights to that song and make it available.)
