Plot Summary
Superstar George Clooney turns in a stellar performance in this thrilling sci-fi movie from Academy Award winners Steven Soderbergh and James Cameron. Aboard a lonely space station orbiting a mysterious planet, terrified crew members are experiencing a host of strange phenomena, including eerie visitors who seem all too human. Fresh: Soderbergh does a fine job creating a moody atmosphere of pervasive anxiety.
Rotten: Comes across as less than a spontaneous work of the heart and more like a grim-faced stab at artistic importance.
Fresh: I prefer Soderbergh's concentration on his two lovers over Tarkovsky's mostly male, mostly patriarchal debating societies.
Fresh: If you give it half a chance, it will bore into your subconscious, mess with your mind and leave you mumbling, 'Hmm, what if --'

Very Underrated
Many people panned this when it came out. It's extremely challenging for some people because of what it doesn't spell out, but what it doesn't spell out is the point of it. This is not an action movie, and it's not a blow-stuff-up space cowboy movie. It's a romance, but not in a hallmark card way, more of a quantum physics way. :) The atmosphere of this is open, floating...very similar to 2001. It is not as difficult as 2001 to grasp. Even so, this is a drama with tragic romantic elements that is staged in a sci-fi theater. It's about what it means to be who you are, and what it means to love others. This is gorgeous, hypnotic film.
Don't judge a book by its cover
I know it's an old cliché, but it's very true with this movie. Although I confess I enjoy a blow-em-up, shoot first, ask questions later, bouncing jugs movie, I try to watch a wide range of films in order to experience everything. From Steve McQueen Westerns to Paris Hilton homemade videos (nothing wrong with night vision, right?) to Will Ferrell’s NASCAR fever to Keira Knightley's stunning performance in Atonement, I love it all. But Solaris is very different from any movie I have ever seen. The incredible imagery caught me very off guard when I first saw this movie, it is amazing! I have since watched this movie multiple times, but I still cannot fully comprehend its embracing nature. If you're someone who can't stand five minutes of watching a screen without seeing a car exploding, this is not for you. I cannot literally explain why, but this movie caused me to become engrossed into the story right off the bat. I think it might have been the rain. Its beauty and effortless flow is intoxicating and I couldn't help but become lost and enveloped until the very end and even after it was over. And yet, it does not answer any questions you might have at the end of the movie, but I think that is the point, for the viewers and for Clooney. You can form your own opinion, or does having an opinion really even constitute reality? What is reality? Can you define it? If you enjoy watching a movie that spell bounds you and leaves you feeling like you have left Earth and all its trivial troubles for at least a short while, I recommend this movie.
unbelievable
The mark of a great movie is often a loyal underground following... shadowed by poor reviews by the masses. Thats what we have here. Amazing imagery and music accompanied by true emotion. Clooney's agent cringed. Soderbergh is surely still smiling.
