Plot Summary

Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning star in Academy Award winner Sofia Coppola's witty and moving story about the special bond between a father and his daughter. Actor Johnny Marco (Dorff) is leading the fast-paced lifestyle of a tabloid celebrity. Their time together encourages Johnny to re-question his life in ways he never expected.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Coppola is a true filmmaker, and in Somewhere she pierces the Hollywood bubble from the inside. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Dec 30, 2010

Rotten: Casting the less-than-charismatic Dorff may bolster Coppola's thesis, but it's dramatically self-defeating. How can we feel for Johnny, when there's no there there? – David Ansen, Newsweek, Jan 7, 2011

Fresh: Ultimately, Somewhere may be too static, too minimalist a tale. But there's grace here, in its aching assessment of loneliness, in its examination of connections and family... – Steven Rea, Philadelphia Inquirer, Jan 13, 2011

Fresh: The writer-director of "Lost in Translation" and "Marie Antoinette" has made the malaise of the privileged her special turf. Ennui is her milieu. And Coppola has a talent for revealing its existential and cultural dimensions. – Lisa Kennedy, Denver Post, Jan 7, 2011

Hollywood Existential

If Beckett wrote Entourage. A minimal, atmospheric, humble masterwork. Sofia Coppola is an american original. Simply one of our best filmmakers.

Slow Plodding Dull Pretentious CRAP

It is very difficult to feel anything for people that live such rich lives as most of the people in this film. It is dull, plodding oh feel pity for the poor rich puke chain smoking in every scene here. I kept hoping the main character would just go get a REAL job and find some meaning in life. This is one of the most BORING flicks I have been foolish enough to pay for in a long time. Middle class folks like me will not be able to feel anything for the poor anguished bored rich folks in this film. We will just want to advise them ... on how to get a life. Coppola and all connected with this have probably never had a REAL job or made less than 30,000 a year. Made by rich spoiled brats... sorry... this was crap. DULL boring a constant feeling of ok art house flick ... make something happen and help me feel for the rich spoiled brats in this film.

Got the idea and mood, but not impressed

Yes, this is not Hollywood movie, it is different, but is it enough to be a good movie? Yes, it makes mood and feeling, shows director's point of view, but actually nothing else. There is no real storyline, no development, nothing! Too slow and boring, overrated.
