Plot Summary

Somm is the story of four sommeliers attempting to pass the prestigious Master Sommelier exam, a test with one of the lowest pass rates in the world. The exam covers literally anything having to do with the entire world of wine and that is just the beginning. Access to the Court Of Master Sommeliers has always been strictly regulated and cameras have never been allowed anywhere near the exam.... Until now. How much do you know about wine?

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: "Somm," though an entree into a little-known world, rarely finds a second dimension. – Rachel Saltz, New York Times, Jun 20, 2013

Fresh: [It's] a Herculean feat that all but requires advanced degrees in wine theory, history, geography, service and, most crucially, tasting, all of which director Jason Wise examines in crisp, quaffable if overlong fashion. – Justin Chang, Variety, Jun 21, 2013

Fresh: We've seen these guys torture themselves so much, we inevitably get emotionally involved in the final verdict, and drinking to their success is what we'd all like to do. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Jun 20, 2013

Fresh: Engaging doc isn't just for wine nerds. – John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter, Jul 10, 2013

Incredible!

This documentary is by far, one of the best I've ever seen. If you have not a clue about wine or where it comes from, you'll walk out knowing everything! I was one of them. I love to drink it but now knowing where it comes from and how these guys spent so much time learning to taste what country it's from, fruits, barrels, etc... was just incredible! A must see! Jason Wise is a genius! Cheers!

Awesome

Being a somm, and watching this movie just makes you want to keep going! Awesome shots, great filmography and great characters that make you rooting for them to pass! Awesome documentary. Makes me love wine even more.

Buy this FILM, and open some good wine! It is a BLAST!

If you love wine, this is a MUST SEE!
I saw this film twice at the Seattle International Film Festival earlier this month, and just bought it here so that I can show it to my friends.
Obviously the critics simply didn't get it. (Maybe it is because there are no guns, no sex and no one dies.) In response to Ben Sachs of the Chicago Reader: of course some of these guys are arrogant and anal retentive, you would have to be! I think that is part of what makes it so fascinating.
I would still love to sit down and taste wine with any one of these guys!
The journey the film takes you on is also fascinating with a glimpse into what these people need go through as well as the process to test for Master Sommelier.
It is not typical of a documentary in that it has all the elements of a good movie and it flows more like a movie, it just happens to be real. He followed these guys for three years to make this film.
I told the director that I wanted to leave the theater as soon as the film was over and go open a bunch of bottles of wine and start tasting!
I was surprised just how much I cared about these candidates for Master Sommelier by the end of the film. Have a hanky close by if you are a sap like me!
